class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is <strong>chikungunya?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite being one of the most common mosquito-related diseases, chikungunya is not well known.<sup>1,4<\/sup> It is caused by a virus (chikungunya virus or CHIKV), just like the more well-known diseases spread by mosquitoes \u2013 malaria, Zika and dengue.<sup>4,5<\/sup> Even the symptoms of chikungunya are similar to these diseases, meaning chikungunya can often be mistaken for them.<sup>4\u20138<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name \u201cchikungunya\u201d (pronounced chi\u00b7kun\u00b7gunya) means \u201cto become contorted\u201d in Kimakonde, an East African language.<sup>5<\/sup> It represents how the symptoms such as joint class=\"wp-block-heading\">How <strong>chikungunya spreads?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People can become infected with chikungunya when they are bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus.<sup>9<\/sup> It is spread by two types of mosquito that are mostly active during the day.<sup>5<\/sup> Mosquitoes pick up the virus by biting an infected person, passing it on to class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is <strong>chikungunya contagious?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-16-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A person with chikungunya cannot give it to another person through coughing, sneezing, or touching.<sup>10<\/sup> However, if a pregnant person is infected at the time of giving birth, the baby can become infected, often resulting in severe You may only have heard of mosquitoes that bite at night \u2013 that annoying buzz around your pillow. But the mosquitoes that spread chikungunya usually bite during the day.<sup>5<\/sup><br><br>This means it\u2019s hard to avoid them. Just sleeping under a mosquito net at night is unlikely to give you enough protection.<sup>5<\/sup> <br><br>But you don\u2019t need to let chikungunya stop your travels.
